Dedicated in 1861, Arlington Street Church, featuring 16 Tiffany stained glass windows, a 190-foot spire, and a collection of 16 hand-rung bells, was the first public building in Boston’s Back Bay. Brownstone was the material of choice for elegant buildings of the time, but its inherent frailty has given way in the extremes of the New England climate.
The award-winning architecture firm Bruner/Cott has been retained to design and oversee a comprehensive restoration and preservation of the degraded 160-year-exterior of the church. Now we are being invited to join in funding this important work.
To date, we have received over $1 million in grants, a single gift of nearly $250,000 from a very generous neighbor, and $62,360 in member gifts. We will need another $1,437,640 to complete Phase 1, which will include restoration of the portico (the Arlington Street face of the church), rebuilding the Boylston Street steps, and accessibility enhancements, including a beautiful new ramp on the Arlington Street side. Construction is slated to begin in spring of 2021. Your gift is fully tax-deductible and will be received with deep gratitude. 1. Donate by end of year to have your gift count toward your 2020 tax deductions. 2. You can also pledge your gift now and pay next year to have this gift count toward your 2021 charitable giving deductions. 3. Double your impact with an employer match. Many companies offer a giving match. Don't forget to check and submit! 4. Every gift matters. Our grant applications are strengthened by showcasing a high congregation giving participation rate. Let's get to 100%!
